National School Bus Safety Week is October 17-21. As the mornings get darker, the danger for pedestrians and bike riders increases. Review these tips with your children:
ON THE WAY TO THE BUS
1. Be Alert. Arrive at your stop at least FIVE minutes early.
2. Obey all traffic lights and signals.
3. Plan to walk with schoolmates when possible and face traffic.
4. When crossing streets, always cross at crosswalks and intersections.
5. Look both ways before crossing the street.
AT THE BUS STOP
6. Stand back from the curb or road at least three giant steps.
7. Don’t push or shove when entering or exiting and always use the steps and hand rail.
8. Always obey the bus driver and wait for the driver’s signal before crossing.
9. Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the school bus.
10. Never crawl under the bus. If you drop something under the bus, notify the bus driver.
WHEN RIDING THE BUS
11. Take your seat quietly and quickly. Remain seated while the bus is moving.
12. Keep your feet on the floor and never extend your hands, arms, head or any object out the window of the bus.
13. Talk in a quiet voice, be courteous to the driver and schoolmates and try not to distract the driver through misbehavior.

National School Bus Safety Week is October 17-21. Here are some safety reminders for motorists:
• The overall best practice is to understand the stop arm law. If ever in doubt, stop!
• Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
• Motorists may begin moving only when the red flashing lights are turned off, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins to move.
• Never pass on the right side of the bus, where children enter or exit. This is illegal and can have tragic results.
• The greatest risk to a child isn’t riding a school bus but approaching or leaving one. That’s why, as a vehicle driver, it is especially important to pay attention. Students’ lives are on the line.
• Slow Down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood. Watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops.
• Don’t drive distracted. Be alert. Children arriving for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
• Watch out for young people who may be distracted and not paying attention to the traffic around them.

National School Bus Safety Week is October 17-21.
Drivers speeding past stopped school buses is a major issue all across the country, with a recent survey from the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation finding that this reckless behavior occurs roughly 41 million times in the United States during a single school year.
And that issue has resulted in deadly consequences for some of the country’s youngest, most-vulnerable road users. Find out more: https://5il.co/1jhen
