Veteran music educator Douglas Van Fleet's name was installed this week to honor his lifetime of service as a band and orchestra leader and promoter of music in our region. Mr. Van Fleet was the band and orchestra director at Paducah Tilghman from 1976 to 1992 and went to teach music for 29 years. In 2008 he revived the orchestra program at Paducah Tilghman and started the orchestra program at Paducah Middle in 2011. As Paducah Middle Band Director Lindsey Williams said so eloquently in her remarks at the the PTHS Christmas concert, "Mr. Van Fleet is the grandfather of all music in Paducah, but he is so much more than that...thank you for being so dedicated to the development of young people, and for being a leader and mentor with music at the center of our lives and hearts."
