Paducah Tilghman High School junior Jill Slaughter won the district first place award, including a cash prize, in the Fleet Reserve Association's annual essay contest.
The Fleet Reserve Association, dedicated to serving the Sea Services (U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard), has been a valued supporter of our students and school community.
The contest offers students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to express their thoughts on "What Memorial Day means to Me" in 350 words or less. Our West KY Fleet Reserve Association Branch sponsor is Dr. Aaron E. Beals, who served in the Navy and taught horticulture at PTHS for 19 year before retiring in 1994. Dr. Beals actively encourages our students to enter the essay contest every year.
The FRA sponsors the annual essay contest to promote the spirit of Americanism and patriotism among our country’s youth. The contest is open to all students, grades 7 through 12, including those who are home schooled. Local winners are forwarded for competition at the regional level and regional winners compete for national prizes.
We appreciate the FRA's ongoing support and the opportunity it provides for students to express their creativity and honor the significance of Memorial Day.
